Hey everyone, I’m going to live on a sailboat!!

imageHi and thanks for stopping by!  This is the home of my little blog to document my journey to become a liveaboard.  For those who are unfamiliar with “liveaboard”, that is a term for a person who lives on a boat.  I had never heard of it until about two months ago.   This is a casual place for me to share my ups and downs along the way, along with what I learn (hopefully).

My main goal is to have a place of my own. I live in San Diego, California, and there is no way I can afford a house here.  I currently rent a room from a lovely couple who just had a baby.  It’s great, but I’d like my own little world.  I have a 15 year old Border Collie named Kaleigh. Having a dog may present a couple of hurdles for me, especially an older gal.

I hope to get this all going by Christmas time 2015.  I have already begun the process, so the next few posts will be a recap of what I’ve done thus far.  I always welcome helpful hints or recommendations, so feel free to share your thoughts with me!

Ill do my best to keep this story flowing and interesting, so please stay tuned and check back when you’ve got some time, photos coming soon!

  1. Eileen and Kaleigh, so excited for you! I’m in a 34′ catamaran on the east coast and planning to live aboard full time soon.
Good luck with your endeavor. I hope the Christmas deadline works out. There are so many sailing blogs to read. Have you ever checked out the live aboard and tiny home videos on faircompanies.com- lots of small space living ideas.
My blog is new but there is a lot more to come.
Take care and happy sailing to you!

    • Hi Tiffany! Thanks so much for the kind words. I’m very excited to start this new stage of my life. Where are you back east? I’ve never been on a catamaran, but I see them all the time while at work…my job is in the middle of mission bay in San Diego.
And thanks for the suggestions for info, I have checked out the fair companies videos. I really like the one girl who lives on the boat “Daphne”. I saw that she did a Ted talk to, which was awesome.
Hope the full time catamaran life is awesome for you!!

      Thanks again,

      • Hello!
We are on the Potomac River in the Chesapeake Bay very close to DC. Your bay probably has much better sailing than the river.

You may also want to check out La Vagabonde- two Aussies who cruise the world in a sailboat. They have 17 videos on YouTube so you can start from 1 and work your way up.
I just saw a Daphne video where they were insulating her floor for the winter. So much to do on a boat!

I can’t wait to read about your adventures as you transition to the boat. I’m also interested in how it will go with Kaleigh.
I look forward to your updates.

      • Oh cool, I actually checked out your blog after I messaged you…I like the “if the boat sinks just stand up” part, haha. I’ve only been to DC once since the field trips we had when I was in school. My favorite band is from there, they’re called the pietasters.
And I’m hoping Kaleigh will be ok on a boat. She’s getting up there in age. My boyfriend said he could probably make a little ramp for her if we can’t find one. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Have a great holiday! (Hope you’re not working!)

      • Omg I know the pietasters! I went to school with one of their brothers and they were pretty big when I was getting into the local DC music scene.

I hope you can work out a ramp for your pup. There is another WordPress blogger who has a dog on their boat and I’ve been interested in their travels by sea.

My cat is elderly and will be long gone by the time we start cruising. We are thinking about a dog but still wondering about potty time. Do you need a patch of grass on the deck? Too bad you cannot train her to use a litter box!
