Hello from the Rolando Street Fair!

I’m a terrible blogger…

I haven’t had anything intersting going on in the world of sailing or potential sailing.  I have an interview tomorrow for a second job…maybe this one will work and I can save up for the boat!

Today I have a little space at a local street fair.  My first observation: this is a long damn day.   Holy moly, I didn’t realize what I was getting into!  We started setting up at 8/8:30 am.  This goes until 6pm…then we have to wait to get our cars pulled up to our space.   And I had about  5 hours sleep.

My second observation:  I need more printed material!  Signs, photos of the products being used, clothing on a person…all sorts of things.  I tend wait until the last minute for everything, and today was no exception.  I could also use a couple of shelves or tables.

Yet another observation: I should have brought a cooler with snacks and water.  Holy moly, I’m a thirsty reason.  And I also love snacks.

Here’s a photo of my little space

Well, that’s the view from my chair.  I’m exhausted, haha.

I haven’t sold a thing.   Oh well, I’ll chalk it up to a learning experience.

Amazon?  eBay? Etsy??

Or should I put it more simply:  how the hell am I going to sell all of these yarn things??  I’ve gotten a couple of likes on etsy, but no purchases…wah waaaaaah.

I have a secret to tell…I’ve become a crochet addict!  I can’t stop making things, it’s so fun for me!  I started crocheting with the hopes of selling the items to generate money for the boat I plan to buy.  Right now I just have a bedroom slowly becoming engulfed in yarn.  If you’re ever in the need of yarn, I recommend swinging by Joanns Fabrics…they’re coupons and deals are sweet!

In other news…my roommate is the chief of medicine at a veterinary chain in the area.  One of her practice managers has been let go, which translates to the position that I applied to a year ago opening up again.  Yes, I’m being an opportunist.  My roommate recommended me for the job last year, but they went in a different direction.  Since it’s a chain or corporation, they have a bunch of locations here, and some other practice managers have left.  My roommate put in a good word, so I very much hope to get an interview.  I’d love to work with animals again.  I was a vet tech in Princeton, NJ a long time ago.  It was a great job, but I ended up moving downtown to Philadelphia for art school and had to leave.  So we’ll see.  Maybe I’ll get a “real” job after all.  Most of me is so exhausted from restaurant work both physically and emotionally I can’t leave fast enough.  But part of me is afraid of the potential change.  I’ve never worked 9-5.  Never been on salary.   I’m enjoying my days free to work on projects or spending time at the beach…. I mean, I do live in San Diego, CA.

And another thing.  My boyfriend is having some health issues.  A few years ago he had a bad breakup and began drinking to get over a broken heart.  Since then, he’s drank almost every day.  Since we’ve been dating he’s been working on stopping.  But due to his excessive drinking his body is dependent on the alcohol.  He doesn’t have health insurance, and he’s been trying to get obamacare but that’s been a joke.  He’s had little to no sleep for a couple of months which result in him trying to catch up on sleep all day until it’s time for work.  He’s also been getting sick and not eating much.  I brought him soup today and his hands were shaking so badly he couldn’t use the spoon.  I’ve been staying at my house so he has quiet and can try to sleep.  I’m afraid that he’s going to have a seizure or have done so much damage to his body that he won’t recover.  He used to get up early every day, cook breakfast, play guitar or piano, work in the garden, go surfing or spearfishing…basically he was the opposite of what’s going on now.   He’s been supportive of the whole boat idea and pretty much anything I’ve talked about doing.  I feel worried not being with him, but then if I’m there it’d be counterproductive since I’d most likely wake him up over and over.

I’m still hoping to get my boat and make it my little craft world.  I’d also like to get another little buddy, dog or cat…or both!

Here are a couple of pics of my recent creations and attempted creations..

Hope you’re all well!!

Some things I’ve been working on…

I’ve been trying to keep busy.  We’ve had some bad weather move through San Diego and I don’t quite know what to do with myself…besides crochet like a maniac.

Hopefully I can sell these things, they sure are taking up a lot of space in my closet!!

I’ve been scanning the sailboat listings, and a couple stood out to me, but nothing I’ve made contact about.

Yet again my hours have been cut at work.  I’ve only worked one day out of the weeks schedule.  How is no one doing anything about this precedent setting slow season??  I work at a resort, in a city, by the ocean…

I know that the ideal weather has passed, but the management seems intent on not spending money to advertise or make any effort to let the public know we exist.  It’s very frustrating.  They think that relying on social media is a feasible way to generate business.  I don’t know about you, but I’ve never gone to facebook to find a nice place to eat when I want to spend over $50 a person.

Anyway, I had an interview at an Italian place which is yet to open in La Jolla.  Hopefully that will get rolling soon.  In the meantime…here are my yarn creations.  I’m still working on that bikini pattern!

Have a great day!

Tis the season…for my shifts to get cut, argh!!!

As I trudge onward with “Operation get a sailboat”, my place of employment hit an all time low for guests both staying at the hotel and coming in to dine at the restaurant.  As an old friend would say in times of financial distress, “this too shall pass”.

I’m sure it will, and my bills are all paid on time, so I’m not in panic mode.  BUT!  I’m trying so hard to make this sailboat home a reality and a slowdown of potential savings for a boat is killing me.

And now that my little buddy has moved onto the big farm in the sky full of pizza crusts and frisbees, I’m even more in full steam ahead mode.  I fully intend to get another dog once I’ve settled into the sea life.  Maybe a little Scottie?  Oh look, the cart is way up there in front of the horse again…my bad.

My days off (which are a plenty) are spent crafting creations, building my squarespace website to sell said creations and fill out time consuming, extensive applications online for job positions which have yet to contact me for an interview.

I have created a new Instagram account called Off_the_Boat.  And if I copied the link correctly this will take you to it:  https://www.instagram.com/off_the_boat/

Here’s one of my creations

That’s all, just a quick update today.  Hope is off in the distance, behind the low checking account balance and vastly open work schedule.

See you all soon, and happy sailing!!!

I make stuff too…

I recently started a free sewing class in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego with my friend @whatemilymade.  It’s fun!  I like to make little creations but I don’t have any technical skills or know how of operating a sewing machine…so I’m learning, yay!

I’ve been trying to make little purses, by hand at first, then the one with the skull and crossbones and anchors was done on the sewing machine. I’d really like to just live on a sailboat and sell my little creations. Yup, I’m a girl, haha. And since I am very rational and put the cart before the horse (always), I already have a name for it…but I’ll refrain from totally getting ahead of myself.  Here are some photos of the purses and the bag for my sewing supplies. They are all lined and the purses have little sewn in slots in the lining for earbuds, phone, charger cable, etc.  And the green yellow flowery one is supposed to look li,e a skirt.  Let me know what you think!
